          Information Session for the Urban Sustainability in Hong Kong Course

(Monday, January 12, 2015) At this information session, students can learn about course (structure, site visits, learning environment), as well as scholarship opportunities and other available resources on and off campus that help assist in financing their experience abroad. From 3:00-4:00 p.m. in room 401, Wrigley Hall, Arizona State University at the Tempe campus. Course details: Urban Sustainability in Hong Kong - SOS 494/SOS 598; June 5 to June 20; 3 credit hours; Dr. Rob Melnick. In this program students will study how urban sustainability policies are developed and implemented in one of the world's most densely populated "mega-cities." Working in small teams with Chinese students, participants will analyze urban sustainability issues and develop policy solutions that they will present publicly. Students will interact with executive-level Hong Kong government officials and business leaders as well as professors from universities in Hong Kong and civic and environmental advocates to learn how cities formulate and apply public policies to address their sustainability challenges. (Tuesday, February 3, 2015) Alan Lightman, Professor of the Practice of the Humanities at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was the first faculty member to receive an appointment in both the humanities and sciences will present the lecture. Through works such as The Accidental Universe: The World You Thought You Knew (2014), Lightman explores everything from multiple universes to the perception of time to the question of God’s existence, illustrating along the way the value of being a humanist and physicist simultaneously. The Neely Foundation Food and Agriculture Sustainability Research Grants Program offers funding for ASU sustainability student-proposed research and applied projects designed to support and advance food and agricultural system sustainability. Project awards typically range from $1,000 to $4,000 and can cover any aspect of food and agriculture sustainability. Eligibility: Must be enrolled full-time in the School of Sustainability and at the junior, senior, or graduate level. Undergraduate sustainability students must be engaged in a Capstone-type project or Honors thesis work. Several documents are required for this application.           Climate Change Youth Leadership Opportunities in the National Park Service

The George Melendez Wright Young Leaders in Climate Change (YLCC) program manages paid internships in which undergraduate or beginning graduate students work for approximately 12 weeks on projects in research, interpretation, park operations, policy development, or other fields.           Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program, University of Washington

Join a diverse, committed, and exciting group of freshmen and sophomores from around the country on an 8-week journey from the urban jungle to the old growth forest and back. Explore conservation across urban, managed, and protected environments; connect conservation to cultural heritage and environmental justice; understand conservation in the context of food, water, biodiversity and climate; network with conservation professionals; and become the next generation of conservation leadership. The Year 1 experience, Classrooms in the Field, starts on June 22, 2015. Doris Duke Conservation Scholars will have all travel, food and lodging paid during their 8-week summer experience, and will receive a weekly stipend of $500. Year 1 Scholars may be invited to join a Conservation Solutions Team, or receive a prestigious Conservation Internship in subsequent summers.           Water Resources Research National Competitive Grants Program

The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the National Institutes for Water Resources requests proposals for matching grants to support research on the topic of improving and enhancing the nation's water supply, including evaluation of innovative approaches to water treatment, infrastructure design, retrofitting, maintenance, management, and replacement; exploration and advancement of our understanding of changes in the quantity and quality of water resources in response to a changing climate, population shifts, and land use changes; development of methods for better estimation of water supply, both surface and groundwater, including estimation of the physical supply and of the economic supply of water; development and evaluation of processes and governance mechanisms for integrated surface/ground water management; and the evaluation and assessment of conservation practices. Investigators planning to submit a proposal should contact Susanna Eden at seden@email.arizona.edu no later than January 16, 2015. The Water Resources Research Center at the University of Arizona is the designated Water Research Institute for Arizona. For information on proposal requirements, research priorities, funding eligibility and requirements, and the proposal review, selection, and award process, please refer to the complete RFP (posted on the WRRC website).
