          Democracy Conference 2015: By the People

          Desert Fresh Produce Safety Collaborative Field Conference 2015

(Tuesday, March 31, 2015) Please join us for the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension’s 1st Annual Desert Fresh Produce Safety Collaborative Field Conference in Yuma, Arizona from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This unique, hands-on conference will focus on increasing collaboration between produce safety sectors, and is open to small- and large-farm producers, researchers, students, regulatory agencies and anyone with an interest in fresh produce safety. Morning workshops will cover subjects including: animal intrusion into produce fields; post-harvest food safety; and food safety for the small farmer. Afternoon activities will take place in the field at the Yuma Agricultural Center, and will include a mock post-outbreak interview with media, animal trapping and monitoring techniques, and risk assessment.           2nd Singapore Sustainability Symposium: Sustainable City Design

(Wednesday-Thursday, April 15-17, 2015) With the continued commitment of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to sustainability and urban solutions that are transdisciplinary, transboundary, and fully integrated, NTU's Sustainable Earth Office (SEO) and Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS), in collaboration with a number of Singapore’s Agencies, are organizing the second S3 in Singapore. The symposium will have a Singaporean flavor, with a special interest in the challenges faced by cities and urbanization. The title of this year's symposium is Sustainable City Design, and S3 will again serve as early input to the World Cities Summit (held next summer 2015 in New York). This year's symposium will begin with a public lecture and discussion panel including the presentation by a Minister of key objectives from Singapore's new sustainability plan. More information.

WRRC Annual Conference 2015: Indigenous Perspectives on Sustainable Water Practices

          8th Annual Conference of the Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

(Thursday-Friday, August 20-21, 2015) Ryerson, Tsinghua and Oxford universities are pleased to announce that the 8th Annual Conference for the Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (#AIE2015) will be held for the first time in Toronto, Canada. The AIE Conference was first held in 2008 at Tsinghua University in Beijing, consistently ranked as one of China's top institutions for higher learning, and has previously been hosted at the prestigious Oxford University in London, England. On March 5, a large snowstorm struck Capracotta, Italy, a village about three hours east of Rome. Italian weather web site MeteoWeb reported that 100.8 inches of snowfall had fallen in just 18 hours – an amount that exceeded previous recorded snowfall totals for a 24-hour period. Read more.

Many businesses aspire to reduce their environmental footprints. But often they only manage to take the first few baby steps and not much else. Things such as making the switch to low-energy lightbulbs, reducing wasted standby power and improving recycling facilities in the workplace are all great first steps to take.           Balance-Unbalance 2015: ASU Student Volunteers Needed!

Attend an amazing upcoming interdisciplinary conference: Balance-Unbalance 2015 which explores water, climate, and place and get free access to all events by volunteering. Balance-Unbalance 2015 will take place from 25-29 March on ASU's Tempe campus and brings international, local, and indigenous artists, musicians, scientists, scholars, and aid agencies together to discuss water, climate and place issues with the goal of developing solutions through cross-disciplinary thinking. The conference includes public events, such as the building and launch of a large hot air balloon made from 11,000 used shopping bags that would otherwise be trash and a performance with 100 musicians in boats on Tempe Town Lake. There are workshops on Designing Resilient Communities and Acoustic Ecology and keynote panels featuring internationally renowned speakers such as Gary Lawrence, Chief Sustainability Officer at AECOM, Char Miller, award-winning environmental historian and Environmental Analysis Professor at Pomona College, and Niyanta Spelman, executive director of the Rainforest Partnership. There are also 25 paper and panel sessions, poster presentations, art exhibits, and concerts.           The 2015 Montgomery & Associates Summer Writing Internship at the WRRC

The University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) is offering a summer internship to a student interested in gaining experience writing about environmental and water issues. The internship is supported by Montgomery & Associates, an Arizona-based consulting firm specializing in hydrology and water resource issues. The selected intern will contribute to research and writing for an issue of Arroyo, the annual WRRC publication that focuses on a critical Arizona water issue. Arroyo is recognized as source of objective, accurate and understandable information and reaches a wide audience that includes policy makers and water professionals as well as the interested public. The topic selected for the 2016 Arroyo is potable water.
