(Tuesday, November 3, 2015) When activist Debra White Plume’s drinking water tested high for radiation, she set out to determine the cause. What she discovered alarmed her. Crying Earth Rise Up is an intimate portrait of the human cost of uranium mining and its impacts upon sacred water. Democracy Conference 2015: By the People
(Thursday-Saturday, December 3-5, 2015) Arizona State University will be hosting a conference on participatory democracy, civic engagement and citizenship education. The event will be designed to share research findings, engage in provocative and meaningful discussions, learn from accomplishments and failures, and be inspired by innovative approaches, strategies, policies, tools and practices. The conference will bring together academics, students, practitioners, researchers, appointed and elected public officials, teachers, administrators, members of community organizations, and all those interested in participatory democracy, public engagement and citizenship education. The conference will combine academic presentations with practical workshops, We are interested in attracting theoretical and empirical contributions that are related to the three conference themes. Air and Waste Management Association Meeting
(Friday, October 23, 2015) The Air and Waste Management Association - Grand Canyon Section will be hosting a lunch meeting at 11:30 a.m. Rich Baldauf and Vlad Isakov from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Office of Research and Development will be presenting their work on the "Influence of Solid Noise Barriers on Near-Road and On-Road Air Quality", which included a field study along Interstate-17 in Phoenix, Arizona. The meeting will be at Amec Foster Wheeler, 4600 E Washington, Ste 600 (by the 44th Street/Washington Light Rail stop). McDowell Sonoran Preserve Research Symposium
(Saturday, October 24, 2015) Join the McDowell Sonoran Field Institute and Scottsdale Community College for the inaugural McDowell Sonoran Preserve Research Symposium. It will bring together researchers, students, citizens, and community leaders to share and learn about the scientific and historical research that has been conducted within Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve and other Phoenix Area Parks. The purpose is to promote awareness among scientists, students and citizens of the research being undertaken on the Preserve and surrounding Sonoran Desert, encourage networking, and trigger new research and collaborations that benefit the Preserve, parks, and natural spaces within the Greater Phoenix area. AASHE 2015 Conference & Expo

Environmental Protection Agency Webinar: Nutrient Modeling: Part 2

Commemorative Air Force: Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans
(Sunday, November 8, 2015) On the 40th anniversary of the end of the War in Vietnam, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) will hold a 'Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans' event at its flagship CAF Airbase located at Falcon Field in Mesa from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features speakers and displays. Free admission is offered to any veteran showing a valid DD-214 discharge. The general public is encouraged to attend. General admission includes access to all of the programs, aircraft exhibits and museum for the day and is rated by TripAdvisor as one of the top-rated things to do in the area. Hawaii to host IUCN World Conservation Congress in 2016
The International Union for Conservation of Nature Council has selected Hawaii as the host of the September 1-10, 2016, IUCN World Conservation Congress – the world’s largest conservation event. Held every four years, the congress brings together leaders from government, the public sector, non-governmental organizations, business, U.N. agencies, and indigenous and grass-roots organizations to discuss and decide on solutions to the world’s most pressing environment and development challenges. Hawai'i teachers participate in national sustainability academy
Kamehameha Schools teachers Rod Floro and Brendan Courtot hope to empower Hawai’i’s youth through culture and sustainability. Floro, a sixth-grade science teacher, and Courtot, a vocational technology and applied math teacher, were selected through a competitive application process to participate in the first ever National Sustainability Teachers’ Academy in June 2015 at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. In recognition of Global Climate Change Week during Campus Sustainability Month, the ASU Wrigley Institute has launched the Climate Story Video Contest. Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Online E-Waste Recycling Kit
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality recycling, border environmental protection, and outreach and communications staff, working with Keep Arizona Beautiful, Sustainable Electronics Recycling International, and eGreen IT Solutions created an E-Waste Recycling Event Toolkit. The toolkit provides best practices, marketing materials, contacts, and other educational materials about e-waste disposal. ADEQ's primary target audience for the toolkit is municipalities, tribes, and non-profits in Arizona but, with the use of the toolkit, even community members without any experience can organize an effective e-waste event. UGEC Viewpoints: The effectiveness of early warning systems in the management of urban flooding in Nigeria
Nigeria is a disaster-prone country. The frequency and intensity of disasters arising from extreme weather events, especially floods, have increased significantly in recent years. In the last five years, Nigeria has been affected by several extreme flood events, which have resulted in devastation and economic damages worth billions of dollars. The National Emergency Management Agency disclosed that the comprehensive Post Disaster Needs Assessment conducted from November 2012 to March 2013 put the estimated combined value of damages and losses resulting from the 2012 flood disaster at $16.9bn. The disaster, which resulted in 363 deaths, affected seven million people, displaced 2.3 million others and damaged 597,476 houses. Read more.

The issue of cities and resilience has grown increasingly more animated in urban policy and academic debates. The term has been used to inform political rhetoric as well as a heuristic and operational tool and as a concept within the social sciences. Progressively embedded into the wider torrential flow of academic and policy-oriented discussions on climate change and global environmental change, the term ‘resilient cities’ played, for instance, a central role in last year’s 7th World Urban Forum in Medellín, Colombia. Arizona Town Hall Video Contest
Arizona Town Hall is pleased to announce the AZ Water Association has launched a video contest about the importance of water. The contest will culminate with viewing of the top three videos and the award of cash prizes during the Tuesday, November 17 lunch program at the 107th Town Hall "Keeping Arizona's Water Glass Full." The contest invites submission of short videos (no more than two minutes in length) that tell the story of why water is important to you, or what you are doing in recognition of water's importance. Submissions must be posted to the AZ Water Association's Facebook page at http://fb.me/azwaterassociation by midnight MST on November 6, 2015. WRRC Invites Proposals for Research Grants under the Water Resources Research Act
The University of Arizona's Water Resources Research Center invites proposals for research grants under the Water Resources Research Act, Section 104(b). Funded by the U.S. Geological Survey, the Section 104(b) program provides support for research projects on water-related issues of importance to the state and region. This year the WRRC expects to award three (3) grants of approximately $10,000. Projects are funded for 12 months. Funded projects start March 1, 2016, contingent on federal budget approval. The WRRC directs 104(b) grant funds to a wide variety of research projects. Faculty members at the three Arizona state universities may submit proposals. Researchers in the social, biological, physical and engineering sciences, as well as such fields as water management, water law, economics and public health are invited to apply. Proposals should address WRRA Section 104(b) program goals, including exploration of new ideas to address water problems in Arizona and expand understanding of water and related phenomena. WRRA Section 104(b) research should foster improvements in water supply: addressing issues of water yield and water reliability, water quality, treatment, infrastructure, and assessment of management practices. Proposals should also align with USGS strategic goals for water research as described in Strategic Directions for U.S. Geological Survey Water Science, 2012-2022-Observing, Understanding, Predicting, and Delivering Water Science to the Nation at http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2012/1066/. Primary program goals are to foster the entry of new research scientists, engineers and technicians in the water resources field and to educate students through significant involvement in water research. Proposals that address these goals, in addition to meeting criteria for technical merit, will be given preference. Proposals must be submitted electronically via the National Institutes for Water Resources (NIWR) web site. In addition, 12 hard copies must be submitted to the WRRC. Clinton Global Initiative University 2016
President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will host the ninth annual CGI U meeting from April 1-3, 2016 at the University of California, Berkeley in the San Francisco Bay Area. More than $750,000 in funding will be available to select CGI U 2016 students through the University Network and other opportunities to help them turn their ideas into action. Students must be 18 years of age or older and enrolled in an institution of higher education at the time of the CGI U meeting in order to apply. To be considered for admission, all applicants are required to design a Commitment to Action in one of CGI U's five focus areas: Education, Environment and Climate Change, Peace and Human Rights, Poverty Alleviation, and Public Health. 2016 Climate Fiction Short Story Contest
Speculative fiction stories have the power to take abstract policy debates and obscure jargon and turn them into gripping, visceral tales. The emerging subgenre of climate fiction, epitomized by novels like Margaret Atwood’s Maddaddam Trilogy, helps us imagine possible futures shaped by climate change. The Imagination and Climate Futures Initiative and the College for Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University are proud to announce the 2016 Climate Fiction Short Story Contest. The contest will be judged by science fiction legend Kim Stanley Robinson, award-winning author of many foundational works in climate fiction, along with other climate fiction experts from ASU. The grand-prize winner will be awarded $1000, with three additional finalists receiving book bundles signed by award-winning climate fiction author Paolo Bacigalupi. A collection of the best submissions will be published in a forthcoming online anthology, and considered for publication in the journal Issues in Science and Technology.
