Campus Harvest of Seville Sour Oranges
(Friday-Sunday, February 5-7, 2016) ASU has partnered with Sun Devil Dining to harvest 10,000 pounds of Seville sour oranges from our Tempe campus and have it juiced, bottled and stored at the Sun Orchard (http://sunorchard.com/) facility for use in delicious recipes at Sun Devil Dining kitchens on all four campuses. Media seeks ASU expertise on Paris climate talks
Eight ASU sustainability experts were in attendance at the 2015 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties in Paris, France, Nov. 30 through Dec. 11. With expertise ranging from international law to ecology to ideology, policy and equity, Arizona State University was well represented in the media. Read more.
UGEC Viewpoints, ASU Edition: Designing cooler infrastructure: Integrating performance for urban sustainability
Urban design professionals suffer from two interconnected design problems related to reducing urban heat islands: incomplete human-scale knowledge and lack of metrics to measure design outcomes. Even though urban design is only one part of a continuous cycle of land management, designers are key authors of our urban climate. Designs, once constructed, lock landscapes into certain urban climate trajectories, some hotter than others. Increasingly cities’ incentivize or require designers to include cool infrastructure strategies at the site and urban design scale (human scale). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s categorizes these cooling strategies as cool roofs, green roofs, trees and vegetation, cool pavements, and smart growth. These strategies are designed to reduce urban heat, some probably do, but others may actually enhance urban heat in cities because our knowledge of human scale heating processes is incomplete. New book "Sustainability Science - An Introduction"
Co-edited by Arnim Wiek, Associate Professor at the School of Sustainability and Senior Sustainability Scientist, with many contributions from ASU faculty. This textbook provides a comprehensive compilation of conceptual perspectives, methodological approaches and empirical insights of inter- and transdisciplinary sustainability science. Written by an international team of authors from leading sustainability institutions, the textbook covers key perspectives and topics of the scientific discourse on sustainable development. The textbook aims at fostering the further establishment of sustainability science in higher education and to enable the next generation of sustainability experts to tackle the challenging and exciting topic of sustainable development. Ford, GM, Nissan shift water conservation into next gear (from GreenBiz.com)
For the first four years of its existence, the Department of Energy’s Better Plants program focused almost exclusively on encouraging industrial manufacturers to reduce energy intensity by an ambitious 25 percent. Many are recording annual average improvements of 2.1 percent, according to the DoE’s latest progress report issued in September. Read more.
Call for Submissions: Contested Terrains: Cities and the Possibilities for Transitions to Just Sustainabilities co-edited by Phoebe Godfrey and Carol Atkinson-Palombo
This is a call for submissions to a co-edited volume currently titled: "Contested Terrains: Cities and the Possibilities for Transitions to Just Sustainabilities". This volume is potentially slated to be part of a book series on Equity, Justice, and the Sustainable City published by Routledge and co-edited by Julian Agyeman and Stephen Zavestoski. The central premise of "Contested Terrains" is that the uncertain environmental and social dynamics generated by anthropogenic climate change have disrupted and will continue to disrupt power relations along national, racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic lines, and that the resultant contestations that emerge will be especially pronounced in urban areas. We posit that global climate change will heighten the conflicts that already exist in our highly stratified world and generate new contestations about how, and whether or not, transitions to sustainability will occur. This volume seeks to present scholarly works by authors who engage with a complex, intersectional and integrated analysis of the various conflicts associated with attempts by urban agents around the world to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The volume will comprise four parts: Theory, Barriers, Opportunities and Visions. These parts will act as overlapping lenses through which contributors will address the volume's key questions. Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program, University of Washington
The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at University of Washington is getting ready to recruit students for next summer. The goal of this two-year conservation immersion program is to broaden participation within conservation, and diversify what it means to be a "conservation professional." The program is looking for 20 freshmen and sophomores to join for an 8-week immersion course this summer. The program starts in Seattle and travels to various ExUrban (wildlands and rural) landscapes in Washington addressing urban conservation issues. Scholars don't have to be environmental science, or even science, majors, but should demonstrate a commitment to the environment and to diversity, and be curious, creative and enthusiastic - incipient change-makers. Because the program is geared for students early in their college careers, we are only able to take freshmen and sophomores. 2016 Climate Fiction Short Story Contest
Speculative fiction stories have the power to take abstract policy debates and obscure jargon and turn them into gripping, visceral tales. The emerging subgenre of climate fiction, epitomized by novels like Margaret Atwood’s Maddaddam Trilogy, helps us imagine possible futures shaped by climate change. The Imagination and Climate Futures Initiative and the College for Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University are proud to announce the 2016 Climate Fiction Short Story Contest. The contest will be judged by science fiction legend Kim Stanley Robinson, award-winning author of many foundational works in climate fiction, along with other climate fiction experts from ASU. The grand-prize winner will be awarded $1000, with three additional finalists receiving book bundles signed by award-winning climate fiction author Paolo Bacigalupi. A collection of the best submissions will be published in a forthcoming online anthology, and considered for publication in the journal Issues in Science and Technology.
