The pace, scale and intensity of new energy development around the world demands credible and informed research about potential impacts to human communities that host energy developments. While a fast-growing body of research addresses social, economic, and behavioral impacts from large-scale energy development for host communities and landscapes, their discoveries are often isolated by disciplinary and geographic boundaries. We invite participation from sociologists, geographers, political scientists, public health specialists, economists, anthropologists, practitioners and other interested parties whose work addresses impacts of new energy development for host communities and landscapes. Please visit http://www.energyimpacts.org to join a mailing list for future updates, and to add your profile to our growing data base of energy impacts researchers and professionals. The conference will be held at Ohio State University, Columbus.

Transdisciplinary research in urban Africa: A coat of many blended colors

Transdisciplinary research is a process that seeks to foster learning across disciplines by integrating knowledge from multiple fields through the involvement of stakeholders from different sectors. It shapes urban development research through a shift from collective studies –such as traditional participatory approaches that extract knowledge from urban policy makers and residents using a pre-determined framework – to collaboration in solving the greatest challenges of our time, such as decoupling economic prosperity from dependency on the environment. Water pipes, infrastructure could buckle under climate change (from GreenBiz.com)

About 1.8 billion people on earth do not have access to clean and safe water. Owing to extreme hydrologic events accelerated by global warming, this staggering number is expected to increase to 2.8 billion over the course of next decade. Read more.

          Soap’s dirty secret

Six seconds. That’s how long 95 percent of people spend washing their hands. However, to kill germs effectively, you need to spend at least 20 seconds scrubbing, about the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice through, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Read more.

ASU scientists use 'shake and bake' to get ready

In movies like “Apollo 13” and “The Martian,” there are scenes where there’s a mechanical problem in space and engineers turn to a copy on the ground to fix it. That copy is called an engineering model, and one has been calibrated for an Arizona State University-built instrument launching to an asteroid next month. “The reason we’re doing it is to improve the flight instrument,” said Dan Pelham, opto/mechanical engineer. “It gives us the opportunity to improve the one that’s in space.” Read more.

UGEC Viewpoints: Planning for climate justice in American cities

In recent years, climate justice has been intensively discussed in a global context (e.g., United Nations Climate Change Conferences) and in terms of the extent to which the least carbon polluting countries (i.e., undeveloped countries and island nations) have suffered most from climate change impacts. To understand climate justice at national and local scale in American cities, this article draws knowledge from well-established environmental justice and hazard research and identifies gaps for local-based climate justice assessment in the United States by utilizing a case study from the Huron River Watershed near Detroit, Michigan.           ASU lab digs deep into ancient city's past

Archaeology, at its heart, is about people. People who lived a very long time ago, and lived somewhat differently than us, but people nonetheless. They had bad days. They broke things. They owned pets. So, although this is a story about a university’s archaeology lab at one of the greatest cities of the ancient world, it’s also a story about people, and the people who study them.           Why people are at the root of healthy forests (from GreenBiz.com)

Climate change, deforestation, global warming. These are all hotly debated areas of sustainability that have become commonly used buzzwords in the public discourse. However, news coverage and analysis primarily tend to focus on the technical aspects of these key issues, rather than detailing any human implications. For example, it is reported that deforestation is responsible for driving 17 percent of global carbon emissions, but what direct impact is it having on the 300 million people who call forests home? UGEC Viewpoints: Non-communicable diseases in urban India: Challenges for public health

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, pose an increasing public health challenge in urban India, especially due to changes in lifestyles, behaviours and the physical and social environments in cities. NCDs are likely to increase intra-urban health disparities and have a negative impact on poverty alleviation. The Indian government has begun to address this challenge; however, building awareness of NCDs in the general public, improving the response of the health system, and the need for a solid database for evaluating progress remain important challenges.
