ASU developing game to show impact of home sustainability
Researchers at Arizona State University are working to use a role-playing game to show the effects of sustainability efforts in the home. The project, funded with a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation, seeks to help everyday people understand how their personal choices affect the planet. Leading ASU’s effort is Datu Buyung Agusdinata, an assistant professor in the ASU School of Sustainability and a senior sustainability scientist in the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability. Arizona State University has forged a reputation as one of the nation’s most military-friendly schools thanks to programs aimed primarily at veterans who have left the service. And this year, ASU has scored a spot among the top 100 four-year schools for active-duty students, as well. Read more.

In Costa Rica, that national expression has many interpretations, including “Enjoy life,” “Take it easy,” and even “Hello” and “Goodbye.” Yet the literal English translation ("pure life") and touristic understandings of the phrase are lacking in comparison to its use by ticos — the Spanish word Costa Ricans use to describe themselves. Volunteers Needed for Veterans’ Day Projects
Habitat for Humanity is seeking volunteers to help with two projects to complete on Veterans Day (Nov. 11) in the Victory Acres, a Tempe neighborhood. Volunteers must register and sign up for the event on Volunteer Hub in order to participate. About two years ago, when the full force of California’s drought came to bear, green lawns turned faces red as “drought shaming” became a social media pastime. ASU researchers take novel approach to studying obesity
A newly implemented policy requiring passengers to weigh in before boarding flights on Hawaiian Airlines has triggered a national conversation over obesity and whether people of larger body sizes face discrimination. ASU researcher Alexandra Brewis has heard about the controversy and says that although the issues are nothing new, she and her colleagues at ASU’s Obesity Solutions are coming up with novel ways to approach them. The “purple pipes” are cute, at least. The famous pipes through which re-used water – that is, treated water that often has worked its way through a community’s sewage system – flows are purple. They are painted an eye-catching purple for a reason. You can guess what that reason is. No one wants to mistake the “purple pipe” water for drinking water. Not, like, ever. Read more.

It’s hard to imagine this happening 20 years ago: A multinational oil company wants to prove the value of using oysters to protect its infrastructure and save the coastline. Oysters saving the day is just one example of how the business community has shifted in how it views nature. There are two research areas in the lab – urban environmental equity and social dimensions of restoration and ecosystem services. The research group welcomes students, postdocs and collaborators regardless race, religion, gender identification, sexual orientation, age, or disability status. Diversity allows us to question our assumptions about how the world works and to use environmental social science more creatively and more effectively as we seek solutions to sustainability challenges through our professional actions and private lives. Volunteers needed for Certified Local Fall Festival
Local First Arizona is looking for help with their Towards Zero Waste efforts at the Certified Local Fall Festival on November 5th at Hance Park in Phoenix. Volunteers will help with binguarding and educating attendees about our recycling and composting efforts. Shifts are about 4 hours and you get a t-shirt & five sampling tickets to enjoy at the event. ASU University Sustainability Practices’ Biophilia Contest
Biophilia (n): “Love of life” or peoples’ instinctive bond with nature. Share your vision to bring more nature to ASU’s campus spaces. Biophilic design seeks to incorporate nature into the built environment. Biophilic design reduces stress, improves health and enhances mood and promotes creativity. Participating teams will develop biophilic design concepts for the Memorial Union, one of the Sun Devil Fitness Complexes or a facility of their choosing on any campus. Representatives from proposed facilities and biophilic design experts will choose semi-finalists for ASU students to vote on. The winning design may be installed on campus. This contest is open to all ASU students and entries are due December 1, 2016. First place prize is a $3,000 scholarship. Rules and applications may be found here.
Campus RainWorks Challenge Competition
EPA is announcing the fifth annual Campus RainWorks Challenge prize competition that asks student teams to design green infrastructure for their campus. This year, teams will incorporate climate resiliency and consider community engagement in their stormwater management designs. EPA is calling for college and university students to form teams with a faculty advisor to participate in the competition. EPA encourages teams to be multidisciplinary (comprised of planners, engineers, designers, scientists, and more). Teams will be able to submit in either the master plan or demonstration project categories. Submissions for this year's competition will be due December 16, 2016 and winners will be announced in Spring 2017. EPA will offer faculty and student prizes. Faculty advisors will receive $3,000 for first-place teams and $2,000 for second-place teams. Student team members will receive $2,000 for first-place teams and $1,000 for second-place teams.
