Twelfth International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences
(Wednesday-Friday, 26-28 July 2017) Announcing the Call for Papers for the Twelfth International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, to be held at the International Conference Center in Hiroshima, Japan. Founded in 2006, the conference examines the nature of disciplinary practices in the study of society and the interdisciplinary practices that arise in the context of "real world" applications of social research and theory. The conference also investigates what constitutes "science" in a social context and the connections between the social and other sciences. The focus of papers ranges from the finely grained and empirical (research practices and results exemplifying one or more disciplines) to wide-ranging multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives on knowledge and method. 7th Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy
(Thursday-Wednesday, August 3-16, 2017) The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week "boot camp" for future decision makers eager to join the sustainability and energy revolution happening around the globe. Held annually on the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) since 2011, the program boasts 300 alumni. During weekdays, participants (SISE’ers) participate in high-level talks, visit energy and sustainability sites, and network with Chicago-area experts and program alumni. Birds live longer in the city, but what does it mean for us?
Cities are slowing the pace of life for birds — and maybe humans. A visiting scientist at Arizona State University is investigating why some birds adapt so well to life in cities, and how urban living affects them. “I’m studying urbanization using birds as a model species to understand evolutionary processes that are triggered by cities popping up all over the world,” said Tuul Sepp, a postdoctoral researcher visiting from Estonia. Homeowner Research Participation Opportunity
Do you have a house with a lawn? If you have a lawn, we would like to consider including it in our study! Researchers in the School of Life Sciences at ASU are interested in understanding how people manage their lawns in the Phoenix metro area and cities across the United States. Sampling would entail surveying the plants, soils, bugs, and birds in your yard. To do this, we would need access to your front and back yard. Be assured that participant information will be kept confidential, and no information will be released that can be linked to you. Volunteer with Farmer-to-Farmer
Partners of the Americas’ USAID-funded Farmer-to-Farmer program provides technical assistance to individual farmers, farmer associations, agricultural cooperatives, education institutions, and others in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, and Nicaragua, as well as select other countries. Farmer-to-Farmer recruits experienced agriculturalists who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents to complete short-term assignments (15-day minimum stay; trips are generally 2–3 weeks). Farmer-to-Farmer covers all assignment-related expenses.
