Energy Impacts 2017

(Wednesday-Thursday, July 26-27, 2017) Energy Impacts 2017 is the first North American conference focused on social science research related to the impacts of energy development - with a goal of synthesis, comparison and innovation among established and emerging energy impacts scholars from North America and abroad. The pace, scale and intensity of new energy development around the world demands credible and informed research about potential impacts to human communities that host energy developments. While a fast-growing body of research addresses social, economic, and behavioral impacts from large-scale energy development for host communities and landscapes, their discoveries are often isolated by disciplinary and geographic boundaries. We invite participation from sociologists, geographers, political scientists, public health specialists, economists, anthropologists, practitioners and other interested parties whose work addresses impacts of new energy development for host communities and landscapes. Please visit http://www.energyimpacts.org to join a mailing list for future updates, and to add your profile to our growing data base of energy impacts researchers and professionals. The conference will be held at Ohio State University, Columbus.

ASU scientist aims to decode volcanoes

From Italy to Iceland to Indonesia, volcanoes have been worshipped and venerated for centuries, seen as the abode of angry and capricious gods mollified only by fish, pigs, and holy relics.         GM, Michelin put brakes on deforestation linked to rubber (from GreenBiz.com)

Each year, upwards of 26 million acres of forests are lost, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, as the world’s voracious appetite for palm oil, timber, beef, corn, soy and paper pulp spurs growers to clear-cut forests to plant commodity crops or construct buildings. Lately an additional culprit is putting pressure on forests: rubber harvesting. But the world's biggest tire manufacturer, Michelin Group, and automotive giant General Motors are embracing new procurement policies that are steering the industry toward a "zero deforestation" stance on this issue.         Gully washers and boulder rollers: How monsoons shape the desert

ASU Cronkite professor: Mistakes don't equal fake news

“The intel on this wasn’t 100 percent,” said the 28-year-old gunman days after he fired an assault rifle inside a Washington, D.C., pizzeria because he believed the eatery was enslaving children. The intel he was referring to was actually a hoax caused by a fake news item, and the December 2016 incident is now known as “Pizzagate.” That scenario is an example of what could go wrong when people are given false or misleading information.
