        Sustainability@ASU Free Film Screening: Felled

(Wednesday, August 23, 2017) Felled is a locally produced film about finding worth and beauty in something most consider to be trash. The film chronicles the journey of an urban pine tree saved from the landfill by two woodworkers who give the tree new meaning as a family dinner table. The film highlights the growing urban lumber movement and explores themes of waste, craftsmanship, and redemption. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; showtime at 7:00 p.m. at Harkins Valley Art Theater, 509 S.         Imagining a Different Future: Overcoming Barriers to Climate Justice

(Thursday-Friday, 8-9 February 2018) The conference will focus on a systematic analysis of barriers to action in the context of the process of change; global governance and law; economics and energy structures; the role of science and technology; and what we are learning about human psychology in relation to climate change. Tenth International Conference on Climate Change: Impacts & Responses

(Friday-Saturday, April 20-21, 2018) The conference will be held at the University of California at Berkeley in Berkeley, USA. Founded in 2009, the conference aims to create an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of climate change, its causes, its eco-systemic impacts, and its human impacts. Student reporting investigation finds as many as 63 million in US exposed to potentially unsafe drinking water

The Carnegie-Knight News21 program, a national multi-university reporting initiative headquartered at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, released a major multimedia investigation Monday into water pollution and its impact on health in the U.S. Twenty-nine students from 18 universities traveled to 25 states, interviewing hundreds of individuals and collecting thousands of pages of state and federal statutes and records for “Troubled Water.” Read more.

Amanda Nguyen, a senior majoring in biomedical engineering at Arizona State University, has had the latest wave of technology in her hands for 24 hours. As a resident in ASU’s newest and most high-tech dorm for engineers, Nguyen chose to take part in a first-of-its-kind voice-technology program on a university campus by receiving a new Amazon Echo Dot, a hands-free, voice-controlled device that sends and receives messages, controls smart home devices, provides information and more. When the first students walk into classes at the new San Carlos Apache College on Monday, they’ll not only be learning biology and accounting, they’ll be part of a mission to preserve their language and culture and drive economic prosperity in their community. Arizona’s third tribal college opened Friday on the San Carlos Apache Reservation after two and a half years of intense planning and preparation, much of it done with the assistance of Arizona State University.         Mesa Neighborhood Energy Efficiency Project Needs Your Vote!

The Neighborhood Energy Efficiency project has been selected as one of 200 finalists in the State Farm Neighborhood Assist® program! The submission, along with the other finalists, are live at www.neighborhoodassist.com and anyone with a valid email address can logon and vote for the project. The 40 causes that receive the most votes will be announced on Sept. 28 and a $25,000 grant will be awarded to the affiliated nonprofits to implement the solution. The $25,000 would be used to purchase and install energy efficient windows in a low-income Mesa, AZ neighborhood. This project would reduce the need for air conditioning in the extreme heat of Arizona summers, thus making housing more affordable in the neighborhood and reducing the energy demand for the entire community. In addition, during the installation, Arizona Sustainability Alliance will make a bilingual educational presentation to neighborhood residents about more environmentally sustainable practices offered in Mesa. To support the Neighborhood Energy Efficiency project and vote, click here. The voting phase is open from Aug. 16-Aug. 25 and anyone with a valid email address is eligible to vote up to 10 times per day. State Farm Neighborhood Assist is a crowd-sourced philanthropic initiative that lets communities determine where grant funding is awarded. The initiative utilizes the State Farm Review Committee to vet submissions for causes and empowers the community to vote for the final 40 grant winners. The program has been inspired by the incredible number of neighborhoods that are coming together to solve a problem or improve their community.

        Forum on Extreme Heat and Drought

How should communities build resilience for dealing with weather and climate-related hazards in the coming decades? The event is designed to gather the opinions of a diverse range of people from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. You don't need to have knowledge about the topic to be selected. Applicants who are selected to participate will be notified in August. Those who are selected to participate will receive lunch during the event and a $50 stipend at the end of the day!         EPA Announces 2017 Campus RainWorks Challenge

The Environmental Protection Agency is pleased to announce the rules for the 6th annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a design competition open to U.S. colleges and universities. EPA seeks to engage undergraduate and graduate students in designing innovative green infrastructure for stormwater management to showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices. Stormwater pollution is a problem that is growing in scope and magnitude. Communities need planners, designers, engineers, and other professionals to create resilient and affordable infrastructure solutions for stormwater management. EPA's Campus RainWorks Challenge invites the current generation of scholars to lend their creativity, knowledge, and energy to become part of the solution. Registration opens on September 1!!
