2018 Sustainability Solutions Festival: (re)imagine your world
(Friday, January 26-Saturday, February 24, 2018) What is a sustainability solution to you? Locally produced food and goods? Energy-efficient and healthy buildings built from recycled and repurposed materials? A triple-bottom-line company that respects people, the planet and business? A city completely powered by renewable energy? What about an innovation that would allow nine billion people to exist on Earth? Innovations in Participatory Democracy Conference

Tenth International Conference on Climate Change: Impacts & Responses
(Friday-Saturday, April 20-21, 2018) The conference will be held at the University of California at Berkeley in Berkeley, USA. 2018 Seed Grants Available from Global Consortium for Sustainability Outcomes
ASU is a founding member of the Global Consortium for Sustainability Outcomes (GCSO). The 2018 GCSO Seed Grant Program is now accepting letters of intent, due February 28. $450K available to support proposals that involve 2+ member institutions to implement or scale solutions to sustainability challenges. Water: A pricing paradox
Orange juice. Cable television. Water. Humans could live happily without the first two (albeit with some grumbles about missing the latest "Walking Dead"), but without water a person can’t live for very long at all. Yet we pay premiums for orange juice and cable and just pennies on the gallon for the gallons (and gallons) of water we use each month. This is especially true in the Phoenix area, where residents enjoy some of the lowest water rates in the country. Read more.
New Global Futures Initiative asks how humankind can extend Earth’s habitability
More than a decade ago, ASU declared its intent to become the world leader in sustainability research and education. Since then, courses, degrees, programs, institutes and collaborations designed to help humans take better care of our planet have spread across the university. This week, President Michael M. Crow announced the launch of the Global Futures Initiative at ASU. Its goal is to harness the innovative capacity of academia and develop options for sound management of our planet. ASU remembers former Professor Robert Ohmart
Robert D. Ohmart, a titan of southwestern ecology and former professor at ASU, passed away on Jan. 14. Ohmart was a major force in the creation of ASU's wildlife biology program and involved in the development of the Center for Environmental Studies, which became the current Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability. ASU sustainability scientist addresses Silicon Valley's 'raw water' craze
Silicon Valley: the place that invented the Juicero, PetChatz and countless apps to solve problems you never knew you had. And now comes the idea of drinking water from a puddle. A “raw water” craze — drinking water that is untreated and unfiltered — is afoot in California, and like many retro trends there it’s spurring big sales and controversy. Do raw water's proclaimed benefits of better health hold, ahem, water? Or is drinking untreated, unfiltered water simply a bad idea? Thanks to the generous financial support of Thunderbirds Charities, hundreds of students from Title 1 schools in metro Phoenix will benefit from science-based field trips to explore the Sonoran Desert and learn STEM-based life science concepts. A new partnership between the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and Arizona State University Ecology Explorers will provide innovative multi-grade science education opportunities - in the Sonoran Desert and in the classroom. Spend Summer 2018 in a USDA-NIFA Research and Extension Experience for Undergraduates (REEU) exploring your scientific interests and work with leading scientists at Colorado State University (CSU). The USDA NIFA Integrative Agroecology and Sustainability REEU provides research placements for college-level sophomores and juniors to participate in work addressing complex challenges to global food security and environmental change. Climate and Health Champion Award recognition program
The Maricopa County Department of Public Health Office of Epidemiology is excited to announce that as a result from feedback from our Bridging Climate Change and Public Health meetings, we are launching a Climate and Health Champion Award recognition program. Winners will be announced in May 2018. The Climate and Health Champion Awards recognize local youth, individuals, businesses, and organizations that are taking steps toward implementing sustainable solutions, ecofriendly practices, or policies aimed at improving health and/or health equity (by eliminating economic or social barriers to health) that are at risk of climate-sensitive hazards. Recognition of these positive efforts is meant to spread information about successful interventions and to build community awareness and knowledge. Climate-sensitive hazards are exposures that we know put people's health at risk and are influenced by local- to global-scale climate change. We encourage consideration of risks that affect one group of people more than another. Examples of eligible projects might include water collection/distribution to address high summer temperatures, water conservation to address the potential for drought and water scarcity, school or community garden building, tree planting to increase shade or combat air pollution, community cleanup/beautification to encourage walking or biking, composting or recycling programs that reduce landfill trash, energy conservation, trip reduction programs, hybrid fleet programs, or assisting vulnerable populations (children and older adults, individuals with physical/cognitive impairment, individuals living in poverty, individuals experiencing homelessness, etc.) with adapting to climate change. Call for Session Abstracts for Society for Social Studies of Science Conference
We are organizing a session at the Society for Social Studies of Science Conference on how local entities (taking a variety of institutional shapes from across the globe) create, use, respond to, and interact with scientific knowledge in the context of climate change impacts. We hope this session will lead to usable insights regarding how different entities make decisions under uncertainty. See the panel abstract (scroll down to #92. Join WMG's Valley Docent Cohort
Watershed Management Group (WMG) is excited to kick-off their Valley Docent program, and they are seeking dedicated volunteers to join their inaugural cohort this spring! Docents are the face of Watershed Management Group out in the community, sharing the mission to develop community-based solutions to ensure the long-term prosperity of people and health of the environment. This program provides the opportunity to build skills in different areas such as rain garden care, citizen science, public outreach and more. It is also an opportunity to contribute skills you may already have honed through your life's work and passions and apply to our grassroots efforts as an organization. The docent training program is a 30-hour program consisting of both classroom instruction as well as hands-on workshops, taught by WMG staff with a diversity and depth of experience in their field.
