Leverage Points 2019: International Conference on Sustainability Research and
Transformation
(February 6-8, 2019) Humanity sits at a crossroad between tragedy and transformation, and now is a
crucial time for sustainability research. Radical approaches are needed in sustainability research and
praxis if they are to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Inspired by the work of Donella Meadows'
"Leverage Points: Places to intervene in a system", this conference will explore the deep leverage
points that can lead to sustainability transformations, asking: how do we transform ourselves, our
science, our institutions, our interventions and our societies for a better future? We hope that this
conference will help us move from incremental to transformational change; extend our thinking about
complex sustainability challenges and deepen our collective and transdisciplinary research practices.
To be held at Leuphana University, Lüneburg, Germany. The call for abstracts is open until 30 June

How Michelin is finding a second life for tires (from GreenBiz.com)
The automotive industry has been recycling tires for nigh onto 100 years, originally motivated by the
high cost of buying rubber. It’s a process not without controversy: Many castoffs ultimately are burned
after the most valuable materials have been scrapped. On the other side, many argue that's a better
option than burying tires in landfills. But the conversation detoured into new territory in late 2017. That’s
when French tire giant Michelin acquired Lehigh Technologies, a 15-year-old company that
reincarnates end-of-life tires into a specialty material called micronized rubber powder (MRP). Read

Study: Hot cars can hit deadly temperatures in as little as one hour
A lot can happen at 160 degrees Fahrenheit: Eggs fry, salmonella bacteria dies, and human skin will
suffer third-degree burns. If a car is parked in the sun on a hot summer day, its dashboard can hit
about 160 degrees in about an hour. One hour is also about how long it can take for a young child
trapped in a car to suffer heat injury or even die from hyperthermia. Read more.

Why diversity in sustainability matters, and what you can do (from GreenBiz.com)
Eddie Love was the lone African American in a cohort of 90 wildlife management students at Auburn
University and one of three people of color at his U.S. Forest Service internship in the western Great
Plains region of the U.S. Still, he was surprised by the lack of diversity in the marine non-governmental
organization community when he accepted a Roger Arliner Young (RAY) Marine Conservation
Diversity Fellowship, part of a program designed to attract people of color to work on ocean issues.

Brain Food: The Grand Canyon’s natural water system (from KNAU.org)
The water we drink when we’re at Grand Canyon National Park comes from a deep aquifer that
channels it through a series of caves and sink holes inside the canyon walls. No one knows how
complicated this journey is or how much groundwater is stored in the system. But Northern Arizona
University hydrogeologist Abe Springer is trying to find out. He says a spring is a window into an
aquifer. Read more.
