After her presentation, we'll be invited to join Loren at A Second Look, where she will share her strategies and give you tips on shopping at second hand shops. Thanks to our partners, this event (from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.) is free to attend & open to all. Space is limited, please RSVP to Helene@localfirstaz.com. More information.

Leverage Points 2019: International Conference on Sustainability Research and Transformation

Inspired by the work of Donella Meadows' "Leverage Points: Places to intervene in a system", this conference will explore the deep leverage points that can lead to sustainability transformations, asking: how do we transform ourselves, our science, our institutions, our interventions and our societies for a better future? We hope that this conference will help us move from incremental to transformational change; extend our thinking about complex sustainability challenges and deepen our collective and transdisciplinary research practices. To be held at Leuphana University, Lüneburg, Germany. The call for abstracts is open until 30 June 2018. More information.

How can a wireless network help both rhino resilience and water quality? (From GreenBiz.com)

The sun beats down on the dried Tanzanian soils. It’s dry season in the Serengeti National Park, and safari trucks groan under the weight of excited visitors. The park, a World Heritage Site, draws tourists from all over the world. Its ecosystem is carefully managed by hard-working park rangers — a delicate balancing act between wildlife promotion and preservation made even more daunting by poachers in pursuit of the endangered eastern black rhino. Using geolocation sensors implanted in the rhinos’ horns and novel wireless telecommunications technology known as a low-power wide-area network (LPWAN), rangers can track the Serengeti’s rhinos from a central location, then concentrate their surveillance efforts where the animals are at any given time. The future of rain: Predicting the extremes

Extreme weather, including heavy rainfall, now threatens urban centers on an unprecedented scale. The weather-related effects of climate change will affect the next phase of urban living: We just need to know how and when. Giuseppe Mascaro, an assistant professor of civil engineering at ASU, sought to characterize daily rainfall in the Phoenix area and throughout central Arizona using statistical models and a treasure trove of data. ASU team uses artificial intelligence to detect wildfires before they become catastrophic

In 2017, nearly 72,000 wildfires burned more than 10 million acres nationwide, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. It cost $2.4 billion to fight them. In Arizona last year, more than 2,300 wildfires scorched nearly 430,000 acres, and the prediction for fires this season is above average, the agency reported. An Arizona State University team has come up with a way to use artificial intelligence to detect wildfires before they grow to catastrophic intensity, and the project has a shot at winning a $100,000 prize from Microsoft next month. Mow less, bee happy

"Gonna be a hot one today," you think as you look out the kitchen window on a Saturday morning. The last thing you want to do is mow the lawn. What say you spend the day in the air conditioning with a glass of iced tea instead? Sound good? Of course it does. But what if not cutting the grass made you an environmental hero by nursing the health of your immediate ecosystem? Sounds even better. Read more.

ASU programs give kids a head start on sustainability

As Dorothy and the Scarecrow learned, sometimes nature talks back. In the land of Oz, that meant taking an apple in the face. For a group of elementary students attending the Young Adult Writing Program at ASU, the trees across the Tempe campus are responding in a much less frightening fashion - via email. The program is one of several ways ASU is providing kids with a strong foundation of knowledge about the natural world. Read more.

Summer School - Archetype Analysis in Sustainability Research

Interdisciplinary sustainability research, e.g., on land-use or adaptation to climate change, is increasingly confronted with the difficulties of embracing complexity while building and testing theories that synthesize such complexity into actionable theories. Comparative case studies are frequently employed for this task. However, rigorous comparative approaches are yet frequently hampered by (I) a high heterogeneity of cases that limit generalization, and (ii) multiple epistemic perspectives (e.g. from institutional economics, geography or modelling) that are not easily integrated. In recent years, archetype analysis has been evolving as an approach to deal with this twofold challenge. The summer school provides a cutting-edge introduction to archetype analysis by internationally leading experts. The approach will be trained by hands-on applications, accompanied by an introduction to and training of suitable analytical methods (Qualitative Comparative Analysis or Cluster Analysis), and further developed. At the Resource Economics Group, Humboldt Universität, Berlin. Application deadline is June 29, 2018 for class October 8-12, 2018. More information.
