Personal stylist and sustainable fashion expert Loren North will share her knowledge about where your clothes come from, the impact they have on the environment and alternatives to fast fashion. Loren's styling mentality is to teach you how to use items in your closet, then look at purchasing second hand or from sustainable brands. After her presentation, we'll be invited to join Loren at A Second Look, where she will share her strategies and give you tips on shopping at second hand shops. Thanks to our partners, this event (from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.) is free to attend & open to all. Space is limited, please RSVP to Helene@localfirstaz.com. More information.

Leverage Points 2019: International Conference on Sustainability Research and Transformation

Inspired by the work of Donella Meadows' "Leverage Points: Places to intervene in a system", this conference will explore the deep leverage points that can lead to sustainability transformations, asking: how do we transform ourselves, our science, our institutions, our interventions and our societies for a better future? We hope that this conference will help us move from incremental to transformational change; extend our thinking about complex sustainability challenges and deepen our collective and transdisciplinary research practices. To be held at Leuphana University, Lüneburg, Germany. The call for abstracts is open until 30 June 2018. More information.

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

How recycling more steel and aluminum could slash imports without a trade war (from GreenBiz.com)

Many economists expect the President’s tariffs on imported steel and aluminum to increase what American companies and consumers pay for those metals and the goods made from them. Dozens of companies already have said they will have to fire workers or even go out of business. And, as the retaliatory tariffs Canada, Japan, Mexico and other countries have announced underscore, the U.S. is heading for a trade war with the nation’s closest allies. Read more.

Ban on trans fat takes effect in US, but global eradication could be tough

As of this past Monday, all food in the U.S. must be made without trans fat, the culmination of a multiyear campaign to eradicate the harmful ingredient. The World Health Organization recently launched a campaign calling for trans fat to be eliminated from the global food supply by 2023, but from the business side, that might not be easy, according to Lauren Chenarides, an assistant professor at the Morrison School of Agribusiness at ASU. Summer School - Archetype Analysis in Sustainability Research

Interdisciplinary sustainability research, e.g., on land-use or adaptation to climate change, is increasingly confronted with the difficulties of embracing complexity while building and testing theories that synthesize such complexity into actionable theories. Comparative case studies are frequently employed for this task. However, rigorous comparative approaches are yet frequently hampered by (I) a high heterogeneity of cases that limit generalization, and (ii) multiple epistemic perspectives (e.g. from institutional economics, geography or modelling) that are not easily integrated. In recent years, archetype analysis has been evolving as an approach to deal with this twofold challenge. The summer school provides a cutting-edge introduction to archetype analysis by internationally leading experts. The approach will be trained by hands-on applications, accompanied by an introduction to and training of suitable analytical methods (Qualitative Comparative Analysis or Cluster Analysis), and further developed. At the Resource Economics Group, Humboldt Universität, Berlin. Application deadline is June 29, 2018 for class October 8-12, 2018. More information.
