the challenge of including best practices in healthy building design. Attendees in the 2018 Health in
Buildings Roundtable Conference will engage across sectors and disciplines to develop actionable
strategies that incorporate innovative efficiency and design techniques, new building materials, healthy
building design, and sustainability standards across multiple building types. At the NIH Campus

24th Annual IAJBS World Forum and 2018 CJBE Annual Meeting at Seattle University
- Innovation for Sustainability
(Sunday-Wednesday, July 22-25, 2018) Now more than ever, organizations need to innovate to stay
relevant in a dynamic, global environment. The theme of the 24th World Forum is consistent with the
World Forum’s ten year focus on sustainability. Today, sustainable enterprises not only require
innovative business practices in product design, partnerships, logistics, marketing, accounting, and
finance; sustainable enterprises themselves have created new norms for what counts as innovation in
business and hold the promise of redefining what effective business strategy looks like in the 21st
century. The conference will take place at Seattle University, Seattle, Washington. More information.

conflicts, standards of living, world economies, food production, technical innovation, and the mass
movement of people. Speakers will include U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse; former BP Presidents
for America and China; former President of Shell Oil America; CFO of National Renewable Energy
Laboratory; Executive Director of the Waterloo Institute of Sustainable Energy; Director of the Julie
Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability; and many others The theme of this year’s Geography
2050 Symposium is Powering Our Future Planet. Currently a call for posters and lightening

Leverage Points 2019: International Conference on Sustainability Research and
Transformation
(Wednesday-Friday, February 6-8, 2019) Humanity sits at a crossroad between tragedy and
transformation, and now is a crucial time for sustainability research. Radical approaches are needed in
sustainability research and praxis if they are to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Inspired by the
work of Donella Meadows' "Leverage Points: Places to intervene in a system", this conference will
explore the deep leverage points that can lead to sustainability transformations, asking: how do we
transform ourselves, our science, our institutions, our interventions and our societies for a better
future? We hope that this conference will help us move from incremental to transformational change;
extend our thinking about complex sustainability challenges and deepen our collective and
transdisciplinary research practices. To be held at Leuphana University, Lüneburg, Germany. The call
for abstracts is open until 30 June 2018. More information.

Expect the unexpected in the Anthropocene
One day last April, Arizona State University biologist Matt Chew was leading his Novel Ecosystems
class along the banks of the Gila River at the Tres Rios Wetlands. Chew glanced down at the river
bank and saw 20 dead fish — fish that do not naturally live anywhere near the Sonoran Desert. Or
anywhere in the American West. Read more.

In an age of extinction, what role do zoos and aquariums have in conservation?
Due to habitat damage, poaching and pollution, scores of wild species around the world are threatened
- many are on the brink of extinction. At the same time, zoos find themselves on the front lines of
conservation. In his new book, ASU School of Life Sciences Professor Ben Minteer brings together an
impressive roster of authors that traces the history of zoos and investigates their potential role in
tackling this global biodiversity crisis

Lessons learned from U.S. Navy microgrids in Hawaii (from GreenBiz.com)
Hawaii has a deep relationship with the federal Department of Defense (DOD). The bombing of Pearl
Harbor in World War II by the Japanese cemented that connection in the minds of Americans. In last
year’s Military Microgrids report, Navigant Research found that military microgrids are likely to reach
nearly $1 billion in annual implementation spending by 2026. If what has happened to two of Hawaii’s
high profile microgrids is any indication, however, these investments may offer little in the way of actual
resiliency. Read more.

New study suggests viral connection to Alzheimer’s disease
A first-of-its-kind study implicates the presence of viruses in the brain in Alzheimer's disease. Scientists
at the ASU-Banner Neurodegenerative Disease Research Center and their colleagues at the Icahn
School of Medicine provide multiple lines of evidence to suggest that certain species of herpesviruses
contribute to the development of this disorder. Read more.

How cities can use data to take climate action (from GreenBiz.com)
Many regions and cities find themselves ill-equipped to handle the hurricanes, extreme temperatures
and fires occurring more frequently with climate change. For city planners seeking innovative climate
solutions to implement in local infrastructure projects, harnessing data is crucial. All stakeholders —
urban planners creating more resilient structures; transportation experts working towards vehicle and
fleet electrification; crisis managers preparing for threats — need data for efficient, effective and
holistic planning. Read more.

Challenge accepted: Leveling the playing field in science education
For decades, higher education has used introductory science courses to "weed out" the so-called
"unqualified" students. But the rules are changing. ASU will receive $1 million in grant support over five
years from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to engage in a process of culture change and work
toward including all students in science learning, regardless of background. Read more.

Feeling blue? How this entrepreneur revitalized a natural dye industry (from
GreenBiz.com)
An estimated 1.2 billion pairs of jeans are sold each year worldwide. The magic behind this timeless
piece of clothing is none other than the 50 shades of blue — indigo to be precise. Indigo is a color, a
plant and a specific molecule. And while there are 5,000-year-old traditions of using natural indigo in
places such as India, Japan, and Guatemala, most indigo on the market today is derived from
non-renewable fossil fuels — and thus unsustainable. But Tennessee-based Stony Creek Colors
(SCC) is changing that. Started in 2012 by Sarah Bellos, SCC is the first company in the United States
to grow the indigo plant at a scale usable by the commercial denim industry. Read more.
